DESPICIBLE ME
If you’ve seen the movie you know the characters EDITH and GRU. They both wear knits. When I went in for the appointment I was amazed. The workshop was filled with all sorts of cartoon characters that were being made for parades. They are big forms called walkabouts. They gave me photos of Edith and Gru, which till then had only been seen on screen. Now there was going to be a parade at Universal, so they needed to replicate, EXACTLY, Edith’s sweater and hat and Gru’s scarf. After a mad scramble to find the perfect colors and weights of the yarns, off we went to make the items. The characters are huge. Real people wear them, but there are forms around their bodies and the heads. (Like Micky Mouse and all the others at Disneyland). Edith’s hat was about the size of a large lampshade with added ear flaps . Her sweater, which is vertical stripes was about double the size of a man’s extra large Gru’s scarf was about 20” wide and about 200” long. Figuring it out was the hardest part. Edith’s outfits were made from Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece, Gru’s from Silk City’s 5/2 Cotton. Everything came out perfect and since then Topaz Knitwear has been making lots of other items for the company.
