THE WAR OF THE WORLDS
The designer made a little drawing and showed it to me. Can you do this, she asked. Well, I can get pretty darn close.
The body was an Irish type knit of a mustard/gold color and the sleeves were seven colors in rainbow stripes of plain knitting. I used Brown Sheep Fingering Yarn doubled. The designer would later add a little velvet ribbon at the neck and some pretty buttons on the front.
There were 47 of those sweaters made because Dakota Fanning, the little girl who played Tom Cruise's daughter in the movie, was in a fire where the sweaters got burned, torn, etc. Note that on the picture most of the sweater is covered with a parka.

NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
Freddy Kruger's wore his signature sweater, a Red and Olive Green striped pullover, in all the Nightmare films.
It had to be made out of wool because, it too, would have to burn. (Acrylic doesn't burn) I used a Sport Weight Red and Olive Green from a now out of business source, for the first few movies, then switched to Brown Sheep.
I guess over the years there must have been at least a hundred of those sweaters, but the one that stands out in my mind is the one where Freddy blows up to a huge size. That sweater had to be made in parts because the knitting machine can only go to about 36 inches. The front and back were each three parts, the sleeves were each two parts. In the picture you can see the scale of the sweater…..and the seams didn't even show!
For the last Nightmare film (2009) the director decided he wanted the look to be even darker so the hunt was on for the “new” perfect yarn. I think we tried about a dozen different yarns in different weights and hues, but after many tries the final colors were approved. They chose a very dark red and an almost brown green from Cascade. The sweaters were beautiful….till they did their thing with them, ripping, tearing and burning. I get lots of requests to make replicas of this sweater. Seems there are lots of Nightmare on Elm Street fanatics out there.
